Four Decades, Plus
Home care nurse Kathy Heist, R.N. (center) receives a Years of Service award from LVHHN President and CEO Elliot J. Sussman, M.D., while neonatal intensive care unit nurse Marlene Clouden. R.N. (rear) accepts one from COO Lou Liebhaber and senior vice president of clinical services Terry Capuano, R.N. Heist was one of three employees honored for 40 years of service at the annual Star Celebration. Clouden was the longest tenured employee in the audience. She began working in The Allentown Hospital’s pediatrics department 45 years ago. A biographical video highlighting their careers was shown at the event, held at the Fogelsville Holiday Inn.
ATrio of Friends
When Sacred Heart Hospital laid off nurses in 1971, Joan Schultes, R.N. (left), Grace Wahler, R.N. (center) and Vicki LaPorte, R.N. (right) all got jobs at The Allentown Hospital. Thirty-five years later, they’re still here—Schultes in case management, Wahler in behavioral health and LaPorte in LVH-17th and Chew’s operating room. What’s more, during the 35-year span, all have remained good friends.

A Look Back
While watching a video highlighting the history of LVHHN, chief financial officer Vaughn Gower reminisces with colleagues about his 35-year career. Hired in 1971, Gower watched LVH-Cedar Crest being built from his office in an old farmhouse located near the Cedar Crest Blvd. entrance. He says, “Back then, I was not only the low man on the totem pole, I was the only man on the totem pole.”
